Scripture reveals a church asleep at the very hour she should be awake. This message exposes the tragedy of spiritual slumber, revealing how distraction, indifference, and lack of oil threaten believers as the midnight cry approaches.

By Evangelist Peter Gee, Editor-in-Chief, Christianity News Daily

Introduction: The Tragedy of a Sleeping Church

In every generation, God raises a remnant that watches, prays, and remains spiritually awake. Yet alongside the faithful few, Scripture reveals the disturbing presence of a sleeping church—a congregation that appears religious, attends services, and sings hymns but is spiritually unconscious. Jesus warned repeatedly that the last days would be marked not only by wickedness but also by spiritual drowsiness among professing believers. “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is” (Mark 13:33, NKJV). Again, He declared, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42).

Yet despite these warnings, the majority of the visible church slumbers. She has lost her urgency for souls, forgotten her calling, and fallen asleep at the wheel of spiritual warfare. The tragedy is not simply that the World is dark—it always has been—but that the church is asleep in the darkness. Jesus illustrates this sobering truth in the parable of the ten virgins. “While the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept” (Matthew 25:5). The issue is not that the World sleeps but that the church sleeps.

This article exposes the characteristics of the sleeping church of the last days, warns believers of the deadly danger of spiritual drowsiness, and urges vigilance.

This hard-hitting message will awaken believers everywhere to the urgency of the hour, encouraging them to seek personal revival, repentance, and renewed watchfulness before the midnight cry shakes the earth.

The Biblical Portrait of a Sleeping Church

    1. She Has Lost Her First Love

Jesus rebuked Ephesus: “You have left your first love” (Revelation 2:4).

The sleeping church remembers doctrine but forgets devotion. She can recite theology but does not burn with passion for Christ. Without first love, believers slowly slip into spiritual numbness.

    2. She Has No Oil in Her Lamp

The five foolish virgins took their lamps but carried no oil (Matthew 25:3).

Oil represents the Holy Spirit—His presence, power, purity, and fire.

The sleeping church has programs, planning committees, budgets, and buildings, but little anointing.

    3. She Is Distracted by the Affairs of Life

Jesus warned that the last days would resemble the time of Noah: “They ate, they drank, they married” (Luke 17:27).

    Not sin—just distraction.

The sleeping church is consumed by work, entertainment, success, social media, and material pursuits. She has lost the urgency of eternity.

    4. She Is Lukewarm

Laodicea was not hostile—just lukewarm (Revelation 3:16).

Lukewarmness is not hatred of God but indifference to Him.

The sleeping church is comfortable, satisfied, unmoved, and unbothered by sin, hell, or the return of Christ.

    5. She Neglects Prayer

Jesus commanded, “Watch and pray” (Matthew 26:41).

The sleeping church attends conferences but not prayer meetings. She sings but seldom intercedes. She organizes but rarely kneels.

    6. She Fails to Discern the Times

The sons of Issachar “had understanding of the times” (1 Chronicles 12:32).

The sleeping church quotes headlines but not Scripture. She trusts politicians more than prophets, news anchors more than the Holy Spirit.

    7. She Has Grown Comfortable in the World

Romans 12:2 warns, “Do not be conformed to this world.”

But the sleeping church blends in, imitates culture, chases trends, and seeks applause from society rather than approval from God.

    8. She Ignores the Voice of the Holy Spirit

“Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15).

The Spirit speaks, but the sleeping church is too distracted to listen.

    9. She Minimizes Sin

Jeremiah rebuked Israel for saying, “Peace, peace, when there is no peace” (Jeremiah 6:14).

The sleeping church calls sin “struggle,” disobedience “imperfection,” and rebellion “brokenness.” She refuses to preach repentance.

    10. She Rarely Wins Souls

Proverbs 11:30 declares, “He who wins souls is wise.”

Yet in many congregations, years pass without a single baptism. Evangelism has become optional rather than essential.

    11. She Does Not Expect Jesus to Return

Peter warned that scoffers would say, “Where is the promise of His coming?” (2 Peter 3:4).

Today, even many Christians live as though Christ’s return is distant, symbolic, or irrelevant.

    12. She Loves Comfort More Than Holiness

Amos condemned those “who are at ease in Zion” (Amos 6:1).

The sleeping church chooses soft chairs, short sermons, and entertainment-driven worship over fasting, intercession, and sanctification.

    13. She Has Little Knowledge of Scripture

Hosea 4:6 warns, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

Members of the sleeping church no longer memorize Scripture, study the Word, or meditate day and night.

    14. She Rejects the Fear of the Lord

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).

The sleeping church views God as a motivational coach rather than a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29).

    15. She Neglects Holiness

God commands, “Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16).

But the sleeping church excuses carnality, worldliness, ungodly entertainment, and moral compromise.

    16. She Forgets the Great Commission

Jesus commanded, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19-20).

The sleeping church has replaced disciple-making with event hosting, concerts, parties, and church-growth gimmicks.

    17. She Does Not Carry Her Cross

Jesus said, “Whoever does not bear his cross… cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:27).

Cross-bearing—self-denial—is missing in the sleeping church, replaced with self-esteem and self-fulfillment.

    18. She Refuses the Fire of the Holy Spirit

John the Baptist declared Jesus “will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11).

The sleeping church fears the fire, avoids revival, and rejects anything that disrupts her comfort.

    19. She Has Become Spiritually Blind

Jesus rebuked Laodicea: “Anoint your eyes with eye salve” (Revelation 3:18).

Blindness comes when a church no longer sees sin, truth, or eternity.

    20. She Slumbers While the World Burns

While society plunges into moral collapse, the sleeping church snoozes. Paul warned, “It is high time to awake out of sleep” (Romans 13:11).

Examples of the Sleeping Church in Today’s World

    Mainline Denominations Losing Their Watchfulness

Many churches within historical Protestant streams have become preoccupied with social activism, political alignment, and cultural relevance rather than holiness and evangelism. Their membership declines because spiritual fervor is absent.

    Seeker-Friendly Megachurches Focused on Comfort

These churches prioritize short services, entertainment, “relevant” sermons, and zero conviction. They draw masses but produce few disciples.

    Traditional Churches Bound by Ritual

Some liturgical groups maintain beautiful traditions yet lack spiritual awakening. Their congregations attend out of habit, not hunger.

Charismatic Churches Chasing Experience Without Doctrine

Some circles pursue manifestations rather than holiness. They love emotional highs but ignore repentance and the fear of God.

    The Midnight Cry Is Coming

The Sleeping Church That Slumbers Through The Midnight Hour As The Bridegroom Approaches Suddenly.

Jesus said, “At midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming’” (Matthew 25:6).

    Midnight represents:

    • The darkest hour
    • The moment of sudden divine intervention
    • The unexpected return of Christ
    • The climax of world turmoil

We are living at the edge of midnight—prophetically, spiritually, morally, and globally. Wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes, pestilences, lawlessness, and global deception (Matthew 24:4-12) are rising like never before.

The cry will soon ring out.

The sleeping church will be startled.

The door will shut (Matthew 25:10).

And only those with oil—those awake—will enter.

What Must the True Church Do?

    1. Wake Up Spiritually

“Awake, you who sleep” (Ephesians 5:14).

    2. Return to First Love

“Repent and do the first works” (Revelation 2:5).

    3. Fill Your Lamp With Oil

Seek fresh fire, holiness, sanctification, and deep intimacy with the Holy Spirit.

    4. Watch and Pray Daily

Prayer keeps the believer awake and sharp.

    5. Reject Comfort-Driven Christianity

True discipleship is costly (Luke 9:23).

    6. Live With Eternity in View

We are pilgrims, not settlers (Hebrews 11:13).

    Conclusion: The Call to Wakefulness

The sleeping church is not hostile—it is simply unprepared. But the consequences of spiritual drowsiness are eternal. Jesus is coming for a bride that is awake, watching, and filled with oil. The midnight cry is approaching. The church must awaken now or be found outside the wedding feast forever.
