The Bible warns of a false church hiding within the visible church—rich in appearance yet spiritually blind, naked, and deceived. This article exposes twenty characteristics of the Laodicean, counterfeit church rising in the last days, calling believers to discernment, purity, and truth.

By Evangelist Peter Gee, Editor in Chief, Christianity News Daily.

Introduction: The Church Within the Church

Throughout Scripture, God reveals a sobering truth: the visible Church—what human eyes can perceive—does not always align with the true Church that Christ recognizes as His own. In His teachings, Jesus employed vivid imagery to illustrate this reality, warning of wheat and tares growing together in a field, emphasizing that both the righteous and the unrighteous coexist until the harvest (Matthew 13:24-30). He also pointed out the sheep and goats mingling in the same flock, signifying a separation of the faithful from those who merely appear to belong to Him at the final judgment (Matthew 25:31-33). Additionally, He spoke of wise and foolish virgins waiting together for His coming, highlighting that outward appearances can be misleading when it comes to actual readiness for His return (Matthew 25:1-13).

Christ’s teachings highlight the crucial distinction between the outward profession of faith and the inward regeneration of the heart. The apostle Paul further articulated this concern by describing individuals who “have a form of godliness but deny its power,” suggesting that their spiritual expressions lack actual substance and transformation (2 Timothy 3:5, NKJV). The apostle John echoed similar sentiments, warning that churches that claim to possess the light of Christ yet walk in darkness effectively deceive themselves and potentially lead others astray (1 John 1:6).

In the book of Revelation, Jesus addresses specific congregations that believe they are spiritually vibrant and healthy, only to reveal that they are, in fact, dead or profoundly deceived (Revelation 3:1, 14–18). These stark warnings serve to remind believers of the importance of genuine faith and the need for introspection, urging them to seek true communion with Christ rather than resting on the laurels of mere affiliation or tradition. The message is clear: an authentic relationship with Christ transcends mere appearances and demands a transformative encounter that reshapes the heart and life.

Today’s modern religious landscape starkly reflects the Laodicean condition described in Revelation. The Lord addresses a church that confidently proclaims, “I am rich, have become wealthy, and need nothing.” However, He unveils a starkly contrasting reality: this Church is “wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked” (Revelation 3:17). This serves as a poignant spiritual portrait of the false Church. This camouflaged entity superficially appears religious in its rituals, language, and behavior, yet is fundamentally spiritually barren, devoid of power, and estranged from Christ.

In the book of Revelation, this false Church is symbolically represented as a naked, drunken prostitute, adorned not in pure righteousness but in the deceptive garments of falsehood and moral decay (Revelation 17:1–6). This image illustrates a religious system intoxicated by the allure of worldliness, permeated by corrupted doctrine, immorality, and the pursuit of wealth, while capitulating to the demands of culture and political expediency.

It is critical to recognize that this false Church is not characterized by overt atheism, paganism, or secularism, as one might initially assume. Instead, it epitomizes a deceptive form of religion that exists without Christ; it represents a version of Christianity that has been stripped of the pivotal cross and the profound transformative power that comes from self-sacrifice. Within this framework, worship services often lack a genuine sense of holiness, and communal gatherings frequently shy away from true repentance and accountability.

The sermons delivered from its pulpits are typically marked by an avoidance of the uncompromising truth found in Scripture. Preachers may choose to focus on motivational speaking or self-help themes rather than conveying the complete and authoritative message of God. Consequently, this false Church perpetuates a façade of spirituality, presenting an appealing yet hollow version of faith that neglects the fundamental tenets that define true Christian belief.

In this incisive article, we will rigorously examine the twenty characteristics of the false Church, drawing on contemporary examples from our world today. Each point will be supported by Scripture to provide a solid foundation for our discussion. Our intention is not to condemn individuals or communities but to awaken believers, pastors, and congregations to flee from deception and earnestly pursue the authentic, holy Church that was purchased by the precious blood of Christ. This journey toward authenticity is imperative for ensuring a genuine relationship with God and a vibrant, living faith that can withstand the challenges of modern life.

Twenty Characteristics of the Naked Prostitute False Church

    1. She professes Christ but denies His Lordship

Jesus said, “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46).

The false Church sings praises but rejects obedience. She elevates feelings over Scripture and refuses Christ’s authority over morality, marriage, gender, holiness, and doctrine.

    2. She Is Rich Materially but Poor Spiritually

The Laodicean model dominates modern ministries: wealth, branding, marketing, mega-campuses, and celebrity leaders, yet no spiritual power. Jesus’ verdict: “You do not know that you are… poor” (Revelation 3:17).

    3. She Replaces the Gospel With Motivational Speeches

Paul warned of those who “will not endure sound doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:3).

In seeker-friendly churches, sermons avoid sin, repentance, holiness, judgment, and the fear of God. Instead, they offer positivity, self-help, and emotional therapy.

    4. She Ordains Women as Pastors Contrary to Scripture

The false Church rejects the clear biblical pattern:

    • “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man.” (1 Timothy 2:12)
    • “Let your women keep silent in the churches.” (1 Corinthians 14:34)
    • Elders must be “the husband of one wife” (Titus 1:6), showing male eldership.
    • The OT priesthood was male (Exodus 28–29).
    • Jesus chose male apostles (Luke 6:12, 16).

The true Church honors God’s design; the false Church rewrites it.

    5. She Embraces Doctrines of Demons

Paul warned: “In latter times some will depart from the faith” (1 Timothy 4:1).

    Examples include:

    • Universalism (“everyone is saved”)
    • LGBTQ-affirming theology
    • Prosperity gospel manipulations
    • New Apostolic Reformation (false prophets and apostles claiming a new revelation)

    6. She Fornicates With the World’s Systems

The prostitute woman rides the political beast (Revelation 17).

Modern examples include denominations aligning with political agendas rather than with Scripture, moral relativism, and cultural acceptance.

    7. She Does Not Preach Repentance

John the Baptist, Jesus, Peter, and Paul all proclaimed repentance (Matthew 4:17; Acts 2:38; Acts 17:30).

The false Church removes repentance to avoid offending attendees.

    8. She Does Not Evangelize or Win Souls

Jesus commanded: “Go therefore and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19-20).

Many churches have abandoned missions, street evangelism, baptism, and discipleship. They merely maintain social clubs.

    9. She Performs Religious Rituals Without Heart

God rebuked Israel’s empty worship (Isaiah 1:11–15).

Modern equivalents: ritualistic liturgies, sacraments without regeneration, and churches where tradition eclipses truth.

    10. She Celebrates Sin Rather Than Exposes It

“Woe to those who call evil good” (Isaiah 5:20).

Many churches now bless same-sex marriage, deny biblical gender roles, and affirm behaviors Scripture calls sin.

    11. She Rejects Biblical Authority

False churches claim the Bible is outdated, culturally conditioned, or symbolic. Jesus says, “The Scripture cannot be broken” (John 10:35).

    12. She Hosts False Prophets and Teachers

Peter warned of “false teachers among you” (2 Peter 2:1).

Examples include prosperity prophets, fortune-telling prophets, and people claiming angelic encounters that contradict Scripture.

    13. She Exalts Entertainment Over Worship

Lights, fog machines, concerts, comedy routines—yet no conviction.

Jesus said true worship is “in spirit and truth” (John 4:24).

    14. She Tolerates Jezebel

Christ condemned Thyatira for allowing Jezebel to teach and seduce believers (Revelation 2:20).

This spirit corrupts through sensuality, emotional manipulation, and spiritual compromise.

    15. She Hides Her Nakedness Instead of Repenting

Adam hid after sin (Genesis 3:7–10).

The false Church covers her nakedness with programs, branding, and public relations, instead of coming to Christ for healing.

    16. She Persecutes the True Church

Jesus warned: “The time is coming that whoever kills you will think he offers God service” (John 16:2).

    False religion opposes biblical believers.

    17. She Is Drunk on Her Own Traditions

Jesus rebuked the Pharisees: “You have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition” (Matthew 15:6).

    18. She Is Lukewarm and Indifferent

Christ vomits out lukewarmness (Revelation 3:16).

This Church has no fire for holiness, intercession, fasting, evangelism, or the presence of God.

    19. She Refuses Discipline and Correction

Hebrews 12:6 says God chastens His children.

The false Church hates correction and labels rebuke as “judgmental.”

    20. She Does Not Know the Voice of the Lord

Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice” (John 10:27).

The false Church hears only motivational coaches, denominational headquarters, and cultural voices.

Examples of Modern False-Church Systems include:

    • Mainline liberal Protestantism that denies Scripture
    • Prosperity gospel movements that commercialize faith
    • Seeker-friendly megachurches that entertain rather than disciple
    • Universalist churches that reject doctrine
    • Charismatic extremism claiming a new revelation above the Bible
    • Tradition-bound sacramental churches where ritual replaces repentance

These movements often reject evangelism, holiness, male eldership, baptism, and obedience to the Great Commission.

The Call of Christ to His True Church

    Jesus cries out:

“Be zealous and repent” (Revelation 3:19).

“Buy from Me gold refined in the fire” (Revelation 3:18).

“Anoint your eyes with eye salve” (Revelation 3:18).

    “Open the door” (Revelation 3:20).

The Bride of Christ is a holy, pure, obedient, evangelizing, separated, Scripture-grounded remnant.

    Conclusion

The movement of the so-called naked prostitute church is gaining momentum, drawing many away from the truth. However, simultaneously, the true remnant church is emerging—those faithful followers who strive to “follow the Lamb wherever He goes,” as highlighted in Revelation 14:4. This pivotal moment in history calls for a sincere and heartfelt repentance. It is essential to return to the unwavering authority of Scripture, actively resist the creeping deception that pervades our society, and steadfastly uphold a life devoted to holiness. As we navigate these turbulent times, we must remain vigilant and prepared, eagerly anticipating the glorious return of our King.

God unequivocally prohibits the ordination of women as pastors or leaders in congregations as it is an abomination and a transgression yet many modern churches openly defy and disregard it.
