A Divine Invitation to Restore the Biblical Order of The Spiritual Titles and Offices Established by Christ for the Church through the Holy Spirit.

Christ instituted five offices—apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher—to build up believers, protect them from heresy, and help them mature in their faith.

    Introduction

In Ephesians 4:11-16, the Apostle Paul reveals a critical truth about the structure and purpose of leadership in the body of Christ:

“And He gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ…” (Ephesians 4:11-12 NKJV).

This passage is not merely an organizational guideline; it is a direct command from Jesus Christ, who is the Head of His Church (Colossians 1:18). The five offices of apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher were given to develop and unite believers in their faith, guard them against false teachings, and help them grow to become more like Christ.

Today, however, many churches and denominations have strayed from God’s order. They have invented titles and roles not found in Scripture, replacing the spiritual offices Christ gave with hierarchical, political, and ceremonial positions that have no place in the New Testament Church.

    I. Christ Alone Gives Spiritual Offices

Ephesians 4:11 begins with the words “He Himself gave…” indicating that Christ alone has the authority to appoint these roles. They are not artificial positions, nor are they earned by academic achievement or ecclesiastical politics. Instead, they are spiritual gifts given through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).

“And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.” (1 Corinthians 12:28)

This verse reaffirms that God alone appoints and orders His Church. No man or council has the right to add or remove offices from His divine structure.

II. The Purpose of the Fivefold Ministry

Paul outlines five purposes for these offices:

    1. Equipping the saints (Ephesians 4:12)—preparing every believer for works of ministry, ensuring they are not idle spectators but active servants in God’s kingdom.
    2. Edifying the body of Christ – building up believers in faith, knowledge, love, and holiness.
    3. Unity of faith and knowledge of Christ (v.13)—uniting all believers under the true gospel and correct doctrine about Jesus.
    4. Spiritual maturity—growing believers into the “measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”
    5. Protecting from false doctrine (v.14)—preventing believers from being “tossed to and fro” by every new teaching, heresy, or human philosophy.

III. The Five Offices in Detail

    1. Apostles

Apostolos means “sent one.” They were foundational in establishing the Church (Ephesians 2:20) and carrying the direct Revelation of Christ (Galatians 1:11-12). Although the twelve apostles were unique in their authority, the apostolic functions of church planting, establishing sound doctrine, and overseeing regions continue through those Christ calls today.

    2. Prophets

Prophetēs means “one who speaks forth.” In the New Testament, prophets:

    • Strengthened and encouraged the Church (Acts 15:32)
    • Confirmed direction from the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:1-3)
    • Warned of future events (Acts 11:28; 21:10-11)

Prophecy builds up the Church (1 Corinthians 14:3) and must be tested (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21).

    3. Evangelists

Euangelistēs are proclaimers of the gospel. Philip is referred to as an evangelist in Acts 21:8 and exemplified this gift in Acts 8 by preaching Christ in Samaria, casting out demons, and baptizing converts.

    4. Pastors

Poimēn means shepherd. Pastors oversee and care for the flock, feeding them sound doctrine, protecting them from wolves (Acts 20:28-31), and leading them into maturity (1 Peter 5:1-4).

    5. Teachers

Didaskalos taught and explained Scripture systematically. Teachers build a deep doctrinal foundation so that believers can discern truth from error (2 Timothy 2:15; Titus 2:1).

IV. The Danger of Extra-Biblical Titles

Many modern churches have abandoned the fivefold ministry by creating hierarchical titles and offices that Christ never instituted, such as:

    • Pope – meaning “father,” which directly violates Jesus’ command:

“Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.” (Matthew 23:9)

    • Vicar – meaning a substitute for Christ. The Holy Spirit alone is Christ’s representative on earth (John 14:16-18).
    • Archbishop, Cardinal, Patriarch – ranks created in church history to centralize power but absent from apostolic teaching.

    Jesus warned:

“They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren.” (Matthew 23:6-8)

    V. Scriptural Warnings Against Adding or Removing from God’s Word

God has always forbidden additions or subtractions to His commands:

    1. Deuteronomy 4:2–“You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it…”
    2. Deuteronomy 12:32–“Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.”
    3. Proverbs 30:5-6 warns against adding to God’s pure words, lest one face rebuke and be proven a liar.
    4. Revelation 22:18-19 – “If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues… and if anyone takes away… God shall take away his part from the Book of Life…”

These warnings are not mere suggestions; they are life-and-death decrees.

VI. The Fruits of Human Tradition

    Jesus rebuked the Pharisees:

“For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men… making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down.” (Mark 7:8,13)

When churches replace God’s ordained offices with artificial titles, they:

    • Nullify God’s commands
    • Exalt human authority over Christ’s Headship
    • Introduce spiritual corruption and abuse

VII. Christ as the Only Head of His Church

Ephesians 4:15-16 concludes that we must grow up in all things into Christ, “who is the head,” from whom the whole body grows.

    Paul affirms:

“And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:18)

No man, regardless of title or office, is the head of the Church. Christ alone holds that position eternally.

VIII. Call to Repentance and Restoration

Many churches need to repent for rebellion against God’s order. Jesus warns the compromising Church in Revelation:

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place…” (Revelation 2:5)

Churches that uphold unbiblical offices risk losing their lampstand – their witness, authority, and presence of Christ among them.

IX. Scriptures Supporting Christ’s Spiritual Offices Alone

    Here are key passages:

    1. Acts 2:42 – Continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine
    2. Acts 13:1-3 – Prophets and teachers ministering to the Lord
    3. Acts 20:28 – The Holy Spirit makes overseers (pastors/elders)
    4. Romans 12:6-8 – Different gifts according to grace
    5. 1 Corinthians 12:28-29 – God has appointed first apostles, second prophets, third teachers…
    6. 1 Corinthians 14:3, 29-33, 39-40 – Prophets speak, others judge
    7. Galatians 1:11-12 – Apostles received the gospel by Revelation, not man
    8. 1 Timothy 3:1-13 – Qualifications for elders and deacons, no mention of extra-biblical titles
    9. 2 Timothy 4:2,5 – Preach the word, do the work of an evangelist
    10. Titus 1:5 – Appoint elders in every city as commanded

    X. Final Exhortation

The Church of Jesus Christ must:

    ✅ Reject extra-biblical offices

✅ Return to the fivefold ministry model

✅ Test all leadership by Scripture alone

✅ Submit to Christ as Head and the Holy Spirit’s gifts

For “unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it…” (Psalm 127:1). May we return to the purity of His design so that the Church may be powerful, holy, and prepared for His soon coming.

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Revelation 2:29)
