“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8)

Throughout history, Satan has woven deception into religious systems to lead people away from the saving truth of Jesus Christ. Many of these systems identify themselves as Christian, quote Scripture, and employ Christian terminology. Yet, they deny core biblical doctrines such as salvation by grace alone, the full deity of Christ, and the sufficiency of His atoning work on the cross.

Below is a thorough analysis of 20 major false Christian religions and cults, listed in order of size, which compares their teachings with Scripture and issues a solemn warning to flee from these deceptions.

    1. Roman Catholic Church (Approx. 1.3 billion members)

    Beliefs:

    • Salvation by faith plus works, sacraments, and penance.
    • The Pope is infallible when speaking ex cathedra.
    • Veneration (prayer) to Mary and the saints.
    • The Eucharist becomes the literal body and blood of Christ (transubstantiation).

    Biblical Refutation:

Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches salvation by grace through faith alone. 1 Timothy 2:5 declares, “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.”

    2. Eastern Orthodox Church (Approx. 220 million)

    Beliefs:

    • The sacramental system is similar to Catholicism, rejecting the doctrine of justification by faith alone.
    • Theosis: mystical union with God.
    • Icons in worship.

    Biblical Refutation:

Exodus 20:4-5 forbids images in worship. Romans 5:1 states that believers are justified by faith, not through a mystical merging with God.

    3. Anglicanism (High Church/Anglo-Catholic branches) (Approx. 85 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Retains Catholic-like liturgy, sacraments, and priesthood hierarchy.
    • Some branches teach works-based salvation and liberal doctrines contrary to Scripture.

    Biblical Refutation:

Galatians 2:16 condemns adding works to the gospel. Jude 1:4 warns against turning grace into licentiousness.

    4. Oriental Orthodox Churches (Approx. 60 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Reject the Council of Chalcedon’s two-nature Christology.
    • Sacramental system with works-based salvation.

    Biblical Refutation:

1 Timothy 3:16 affirms Christ’s full deity and humanity. Hebrews 10:10-14 proclaims His once-for-all sacrifice.

    5. Seventh-day Adventists (Approx. 21 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Mandatory Sabbath keeping.
    • Ellen G. White’s prophetic authority.
    • Investigative judgment denies Christ’s finished atonement.

    Biblical Refutation:

Romans 14:5-6 and Colossians 2:16-17 declare freedom from Sabbath legalism. Hebrews 10:12 affirms that Christ’s sacrifice is the completed salvation.

    6. Latter-day Saints (Mormons) (Approx. 17 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Jesus is the spirit brother of Lucifer.
    • Humans can become gods.
    • Extra-biblical Scripture (Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price).

    Biblical Refutation:

Isaiah 43:10: “Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me.” Galatians 1:8-9 warns of other gospels.

    7. Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (Approx. 10 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Prosperity gospel.
    • Manipulative exorcisms.
    • Financial exploitation of followers.

    Biblical Refutation:

1 Timothy 6:5 condemns viewing godliness as a means of financial gain.

    8. Jehovah’s Witnesses (Approx. 8.7 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Deny the Trinity, claim Jesus is Michael the Archangel.
    • Salvation by association with the Watchtower Society.

    Biblical Refutation:

John 1:1 says, “The Word was God.” Colossians 2:9 confirms Christ’s full deity.

    9. Iglesia ni Cristo (Approx. 7 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Non-Trinitarian.

    11. Oneness Pentecostalism (Approx. 5 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Modalism: God is one person manifesting in different modes.

    12. Followers of William Branham (Approx. 2 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Branham as the end-time Elijah-prophet.
    • Modalistic Godhead views.

    Biblical Refutation:

Hebrews 1:1-2 declares Christ alone as the final revelation. John 1:1-2 upholds Christ’s pre-existence as distinct from the Father.

    13. Unification Church (Moonies) (Approx. 1 million)

    Beliefs:

    • Sun Myung Moon as Messiah.
    • Extra-biblical Divine Principle revelations.

    Biblical Refutation:

Matthew 24:24 warns of false Christs and false prophets deceiving many.

    15. Christian Science (Approx. 100,000)

    Beliefs:

    • Sin and sickness are illusions.
    • Christ is a divine idea, not fully God-Man.

    Biblical Refutation:

1 Peter 2:24: “He bore our sins in His body on the tree.” Sin is real, but His genuine sacrifice defeated it.

    16. Church of Scientology (Approx. 50,000–100,000)

    Beliefs:

    • Auditing facilitates spiritual growth.
    • Uses Christian terms for recruitment, but is purely an occult psychological system.

    Biblical Refutation:

Colossians 2:8 warns against “philosophy and empty deceit according to the tradition of men.”

    17. Swedenborgian Church (Approx. 50,000)

    Beliefs:

    • Emanuel Swedenborg placed his revelations above Scripture.
    • The Bible is interpreted here in a mystical sense, without reference to the Trinity.

    18. Christadelphians (Approx. 50,000)

    Beliefs:

    20. The Family International (Children of God) (Approx. 10,000)

    Beliefs:

    • David Berg was a prophetic leader.
    • The doctrines of sexual immorality (Flirty Fishing) are a subject of debate.

    Biblical Refutation:

Ephesians 5:3 commands believers to reject fornication and impurity in every form.

    Conclusion: The Call to Discernment

    Jesus warned:

“Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” (Matthew 24:4-5)

The apostles warned of false teachers who secretly bring in destructive heresies (2 Peter 2:1). These religions do not conform to Scripture nor remain faithful to Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the salvation of humanity.

    Jesus ordered us to:

    1. Test every spirit (1 John 4:1).
    2. Reject any gospel that adds to Christ’s finished work (Galatians 1:8-9).
    3. Warn others boldly, as Jude 1:23 commands, “But others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.”

May every believer remain vigilant, rooted deeply in the Word of God alone, proclaiming salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone.
