The Bible says spouses must not deny each other sex, as it is their duty. When one partner consistently denies the other, this behavior constitutes abandonment and rebellion against God’s design for marriage, serving as grounds for divorce if all attempts at reconciliation have failed.

    Introduction

Marriage is a sacred covenant designed by God for companionship, love, mutual support, procreation, and sexual union. In Genesis 2:24, the Bible states, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” This union is not just spiritual but also emotional and physical. When one spouse willfully and consistently deprives the other of their conjugal rights, inflicts cruelty, and shows rejection, they break the covenant of marriage. In such cases, God provides just grounds for divorce, especially when the marriage has become a source of torment rather than a reflection of Christ’s love for the Church.

    1. The Biblical Basis for Marital Rights

Conjugal intimacy is not optional in marriage—it is a God-ordained right and responsibility. Paul writes explicitly in 1 Corinthians 7:3-5:

“Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another…”

The Bible says spouses must not deny each other sex, as it is their duty. When one partner persistently denies the other, it is a form of abandonment and rebellion against God’s design for marriage.

    2. The Sin of Cruelty and Rejection

Cruelty, emotional abuse, and intentional rejection are all forms of oppression. Malachi 2:14-16 says:

“The Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously… For the Lord God of Israel says that He hates divorce, for it covers one’s garment with violence…”

This passage is often misused to claim God hates all divorce. Divorce driven by treachery and violence is what he abhors, above all, if a spouse faces cruelty or injustice. Willful sexual deprivation and emotional abandonment are violent acts against the soul.

    3. Abandonment is Grounds for Divorce

Paul also permits divorce in the case of abandonment in 1 Corinthians 7:15:

“But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.”

When a spouse acts like an unbeliever by constantly neglecting marital responsibilities and forsaking the emotional, sexual, and spiritual dimensions of the relationship, the believing partner is not bound. God doesn’t call His children to a tormented life. He summons us to peace.

    4. Marriage Is Not a Prison—It’s a Covenant

Biblically, a covenant requires both parties to uphold their part. In Amos 3:3, Scripture says:

“Can two walk together unless they are agreed?”

When one spouse refuses to walk in agreement with God’s design, the marriage becomes unequally yoked. Paul warns against this in 2 Corinthians 6:14:

“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness?”

If a spouse consistently behaves in a godless manner—refusing sexual union, withholding affection, neglecting companionship, and inflicting emotional harm—they are acting as an unbeliever, and the marriage becomes invalid in God’s eyes.

    5. The Pain of Rejection and Emotional Abandonment

    Proverbs 18:14 says:

“The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?”

When a spouse is emotionally rejected, sexually denied, and left in loneliness, their spirit becomes crushed. God sees this profound pain. He is a just God who defends the oppressed. Psalm 34:18 states:

“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart and saves those who have a contrite spirit.”

Forcing a spouse to remain in such a destructive marriage is against God’s nature, for He is a God of mercy and righteousness.

    6. Ezra and Nehemiah: Examples of God-Approved Divorce

In the Old Testament, the Israelites had entered into unlawful marriages with pagan spouses. This unequally yoked union brought spiritual defilement. God’s leaders, Ezra and Nehemiah, commanded the people to divorce these spouses to renew their covenant with God.

    Ezra 10:3:

“Now therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God.”

    Nehemiah 13:27:

“Should we then hear of your doing all this great evil, transgressing against our God by marrying pagan women?”

These godless marriages threatened the spiritual health of Israel. Likewise, if a spouse today rejects God’s commands regarding marriage and lives in defiance—abusing or abandoning their partner—they are like the pagan spouses in Ezra and Nehemiah’s time. Divorce in this case is not only permitted but necessary to restore fellowship with God.

    7. When a Marriage Becomes Defiled

    Hebrews 13:4 declares:

“Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”

If the marriage bed is denied, perverted, or withheld, it becomes defiled. A partner who refuses to engage in God-honoring sexual intimacy is committing rebellion akin to spiritual adultery.

Also, if the refusal leads the deprived spouse to fall into temptation, the sin partly lies on the partner who denied what was due. Jesus warned in Matthew 18:6:

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck…”

    8. Freedom Through Divorce on Righteous Grounds

God never intended marriage to be a source of lifelong pain and sorrow. In Isaiah 61:1, Christ declared His mission:

“To heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives… to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord…”

Christ provides freedom for a faithful spouse in an abusive and sexually frustrating marriage. Divorce on such biblical grounds is not sin, but deliverance.

    9. The Unrepentant Spouse is Not of God

    Jesus said in Matthew 7:20:

“Therefore, based on their fruits, you will know them.”

A spouse who consistently refuses reconciliation, shows cruelty, withholds conjugal love, and hardens their heart is showing ungodly fruit. Titus 1:16 also says:

“They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.”

If a spouse behaves this way, they are proving themselves to be unbelieving, and the believing partner is not bound to remain.

    10. God Values Restoration—But Not at the Cost of Suffering

God loves restoration, but He does not demand it at the cost of a person’s soul, mental health, or well-being. Hosea 4:6 warns:

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

Keeping someone in a broken, abusive, and defiled marriage under a false sense of loyalty to “no divorce” theology is destructive. God gave divorce as a protection, not a punishment.

    Jesus said in Mark 2:27:

“The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.”

Likewise, God made marriage for man, not man for marriage. When marriage cannot serve its divine purpose—love, unity, intimacy, peace—it may be lawfully dissolved.

    Conclusion

A partner who repeatedly experiences a lack of love, affection, sexual intimacy, companionship, and a sense of peace is not obliged to continue enduring a stagnant and unfulfilling marriage. It is essential to acknowledge the emotional well-being of individuals in such situations and recognize their right to seek a more fulfilling and harmonious relationship. They deserve to pursue a relationship that nurtures their spirit and fulfills their emotional needs. Scripture affirms that cruelty, rejection, abandonment, and spiritually unequally yoked partnerships are legitimate grounds for divorce.

Just as Ezra and Nehemiah guided the people in severing ties with ungodly unions to restore their sacred covenant with God, so too can today’s believers, entrapped in difficult and painful marriages, seek hope and liberation in the Lord. Divorce, when based on clear biblical grounds, is not a curse—it is a righteous act of restoration and deliverance.

Let the Church stop binding believers to suffering under the pretense of “God hates divorce” while ignoring that God also hates cruelty, oppression, and broken covenants. Let righteousness, peace, and justice reign in our homes and marriages. For this is the true heart of God.

    Key Scriptures Recap

    • 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 – Marital duty of conjugal rights
    • Malachi 2:14-16 – Treachery in marriage; cruelty is violence
    • 1 Corinthians 7:15 – Abandonment frees the believing spouse
    • 2 Corinthians 6:14 – Unequally yoked
    • Proverbs 18:14 – The pain of a broken spirit
    • Ezra 10:3, Nehemiah 13:27—Divorce of ungodly spouses
    • Hebrews 13:4 – The defiled marriage bed
    • Matthew 18:6 – Causing others to sin
    • Titus 1:16 – Denying God through actions
    • Isaiah 61:1—Liberty for the captive
    • Mark 2:27 – Marriage was made for man

Final Note: Divorce is not the first option—it is the last biblical remedy for a hardened, unrepentant heart that refuses to walk in God’s will. Once all restoration and reconciliation attempts fail, and the covenant breaks, believers can leave peacefully, blessed and justified by God.
